The connections between Haurchefant and other characters in the game.

Haurchefant and Edmont
Haurchefant is the illegitimate son of Count Edmont de Fortemps. While there were some bonding moments, due to the circumstances of Haurchefant's birth and to appease his wife, Countess de Fortemps, he placed some distance between the two for most of the time. Haurchefant, in his later years, would lament how their relationship was less father and son, and more like a knight to his lord. Throughout Heavensward, we do see this and it was only after Haurchefant's death that Edmont would refer to him as his son. Edmont loves Haurchefant. He does. But upholding Ishgardian's societal standards, his and House Fortemps' reputation, and making good of his relationship with Countess de Fortemps, all that contributed to the distance between him and Haurchefant. It pains me that only after Haurchefant's death was he more vocal about his love for him as a son and not a knight. Edmont does lament about his past misgivings. To me, it always felt he thought there would be more time to make it up with Haurchefant, but then it was too late. In his memoirs, he included memories of Haurchefant and Haurchefant's story for preservation.

Haurchefant and Edmont

Haurchefant and Emmanellain
Their relationship is much more easygoing largely because as the youngest brother, Emmanellain is constantly in high-spirits, carefree, and generally just does not take things seriously. He gets into low-risk and high-risk situations constantly. Such is the reason why he gets kidnapped by the Vanu Vanu easily. After rescuing him, Haurchefant contemplates how Emmanellain can remain so optimistic after all that. Not much of their dynamic is shown or written about afterwards. When Haurchefant died, responsibilities within House Fortemps shifted, forcing Emmanellain to grow up fast. He had to confront that his actions comes with consequences and he must resolve situations at the result of his doing instead of shifting blame. Emmanellain now commands Camp Dragonhead after Haurchefant's death. We do see character growth from him and he still maintains his carefree personality. Like with Artoirel, we see him praying at the Haurchefant monument in Endwalker. I would like to have seen or read more of Haurchefant and Emmanellain in the game or covered in the short stories.

The two lived across from eachother and became fast friends when Francel approached Haurchefant with a pudding cup, wanting to share it with him. Their friendship grew and strengthen as the years go on. Francel knew there was trouble at Fortemps Manor and would help distract Haurchefant by having them go out on their own little adventures. When Francel was kidnapped on his eleventh nameday, it was Haurchefant who found and rescued him. Killing two of the bandits, and injuring the third. It was this rescue of Francel that Haurchefant was knighted. Years later Haurchefant would rescue Francel again, with your help, when he was accused of being associated with the heretics. After Haurchefant's death, Francel is seen placing Nymeia lilies at Haurchefant's monument. If you approach him, Francel will turn to you and say, "...It doesn't get any easier, does it." After completing the Ishgard Restoration and The Firmament quests, Francel is still seen at the monument, but this time his outfit gets updated to reflect his outift change from those quests and his dialogue changes to, "...So you visit him still. He would be glad." Something about the society they grew up in and yet they saw eachother as more than just... Haurchefant and Francel's relationship is one of my favorites in that there was complete trust between the two through and through from the very beginning. If anything, I wish there was more of them in the game.

Something about the society they grew up in and yet they saw eachother as more than just... Haurchefant and Francel's relationship is one of my favorites in that there was complete trust between the two through and through from the very beginning. If anything, I wish there was more of them in the game.

Alphinaud met Haurchefant when he journeyed with you to retrieve the Enterprise. Then once more when we head back to Camp Dragonhead to meet with Aymeric, Lucia, and to learn more about Lady Iceheart. Haurchefant, during those times, have seen just how determine and confident Alphinaud can be. Tataru was in the marketplace when the bloody banquet incident in Ul'dah occurred. The Crystal Braves turned on them there when Tataru ran at the behest of F'lhaminn. Saved by Yugiri, the two eventually made their way to Camp Dragonhead where Haurchefant already made safe of their presence before your arrival. Shortly after, Tataru joins Haurchefant in lifting Alphinaud's spirits and that if "Falling Snows" does not serve their purpose, there is Ishgard. And to Ishgard we do head to with the help from Haurchefant. After Haurchefant's death, Tataru is visibly crying in Fortemps Manor when you speak with Count Edmont. If you speak with her outside the Fortemps Manor, she is still crying, at a loss for words. Towards the end of Heavensward's base expansion, we see Tataru placing a bouquet of Nymeia lilies at Haurchefant’s monument. Fast forward to the 7.56 patch of Dawntrail, as we are heading to the Fourth shard in the next expansion, a world engulfed in ice and snow, Tataru made tea to warm you up. She remembers when Haurchefant offered us refuge at the "Falling Snows" and the hot drinks he served us. She continues that she wants to be a kind and caring presence to you and the rest of the Scions, just like Haurchefant was to us. I was really surprised we got a mention of Haurchefant, honestly. When the truths about Ishgard's history, its foundation, and that men and dragons once lived together in harmony was revealed, a determined Aymeric aim to meet with the archbishop about these revelations. If these truths were kept secret by the Holy See, Aymeric cannot allow it to continue. Count Edmont de Fortemps, Haurchefant, and Alphinaud warned Aymeric to reconsider as this confrontation would lead to him being branded as a heretic. Ever resolve, Aymeric knows these truths and the eventual revelations will only divide Ishgard further, "A divided Ishgard will not survive." Lucia quickly prepared an Aymeric rescue mission in the event that he is accused of heresy and imprisoned. Together with Estinien, Haurchefant was quick to join Lucia and support Aymeric's cause and a better future for Ishgard. When Count Edmont de Fortemps told Haurchefant to be reasonable, a determine Haurchefant responds, "A knight lives to serve, Father─to aid those in need! The people need Ser Aymeric─more than ever─and we may be his only hope!" Aymeric's and Haurchefant's upbringing are similar in the ways that they are the bastard sons of respectful men in power. The two worked hard to make a name for themselves amongst their social standings. After the Dragonsong War ended, Aymeric strove to work on a better Ishgard for future generations to come. Both highborn and lowborn would be involve in Ishgard's new government, House of Lords and House of Commons and for Ishgard to become a place where men and dragon can live in harmony together again. I contemplated adding a section for the two, because they never quite exchanged dialogues with one another in the game, but was involved in several major events together. The two are also the major character deaths in Heavensward and revered as some of the best NPCs generally in XIV. They are also sometimes seen together when it comes to memories of Heavensward, be it fanart, fanfic, and the likes. In A Realm Reborn, Haurchefant knew of Ysayle, Lady Iceheart, when activities of heretics and summoning Shiva arose in Coerthas Central Highlands. When you fought against Ysayle then, Haurchefant was so worried about you and Ysayle's summoning of Shiva, half a dozen knights had to restrain him from coming after you to fight by your side. This was Haurchefant's recollection of who Ysayle was. Fast-forward to the Heavensward main story quest, "Unrest in Ishgard". Fighting and chaos has broken out in Ishgard between the heretics and commoners. Ysayle gave no such orders. You, Ysayle, and Estinien return to Ishgard, determine to save and reason those involved. As the three of you arrive in Ishgard, Haurchefant also arrives. He sees the Lady Iceheart with you and he is confused about the company. His last encounter being worry about your battle against her. But immediately as you nod at him, a silent gesture that she can be trusted, Haurchefant immediately trusts your judgement and drops any confusion of the company. Ysayle calms her heretic comrades and explains that Nidhogg is no more, slain by you and Estinien. The peace they have fought so long and hard for, is here now with Nidhogg dead. She would not forsake this moment. When a Temple Knight shouted to arrest Ysayle and the heretics, both Haurchefant and Estinien stops them. Haurchefant supporting Ysayle further by saying, "Providing aid and succor to the wounded should be our first concern. If the heretics mean to observe the peace, then it would be folly not to do the same!" In the Dragonsong War battle against Nidhogg who had possessed Estinien, you and Alphinaud try to pry off Nidhogg's eyes away from Estinien to save him. In your struggles, memories of Haurchefant and Ysayle helps you both to successfully pry the eyes off and save Estinien. In the Dragonsong's Reprise Ultimate, it covers a what if scenario where Haurchefant and Ysayle do not die from the main story events. In this alternative, we see the two joining forces and fight alongside one another to help you against Hraesvelgr and Nidhogg. I love both Haurchefant and Ysyale individually so so much. As stated above, they never quite exchange words with one another, and we see more of them together than talking together. I am always wishing for more!

When when you were accused of murdering Nanamo Ul Namo, it was Haurchefant who showed you unconditional support, offering Camp Dragonhead as a place of refuge to shelter you and your Scions friends. He light-heartedly teases that this could serve as a new headquarters of sorts and gives it the name "Falling Snows" and anyone looking for you with suspicion will be turned away. Haurchefant pleaded with his father Count Edmont de Fortemps to take you, Alphinaud, and Tataru as wards of House Fortemps. Initially Count Edmont refused because housing fugitives could bring unwanted troubles to House Fortemps. But Count Edmont could not deny the persistence in Haurchefant which led him to ask why Haurchefant was so driven on your behalf. And so, Haurchefant bared his heart to his father. Which he believes may have been the longest conversation they ever had... Haurchefant lets you know he would be there to cheer you on should you ever lose heart. He gifts you a whistle to summon a black chocobo that he personally trained and he gifts you a compass to locate aether currents. When he saw Ser Zephirin preparing to attack you, he jumped in between to try and shield the attack away. He could not bear the thought of losing you. But in protecting you, you lost him. To me, Haurchefant loves you. Whether you interpret his affections platonically or romantically. He describes you as "hope incarnate" and would take the opportunity any time he can to fight by your side. In the side story "Thoughts Unspoken", a manservant of House Fortemps found a letter Haurchefant had kept secret in his private chambers in Camp Dragonhead . To me, the letter was a love letter. In it, Haurchefant writes that he does not intend to deliver it to you, but he needed to put his overwhelming feelings into words every time he thinks about you. What adventures or battles could you be caught in? He writes more in detail about the time he championed for you to Count Edmont in taking you in as wards of House Fortemps. He saw the despair you were in and wanted nothing more than to help you and prevent you from being consumed by it. Haurchefant would cross the world if you needed him to. Your presence at House Fortemps Manor was more reason for him to come visit and he could not wait to hear about all the stories you will share, perhaps over a drink! Haurchefant, in this undelivered letter, promise and swear that he will be there for you should you ever falter. The manservant was not successful in delivering this letter to you. But he saw you smiling at Haurchefant's memorial site and know that even if this letter and Haurchefant's words were never delivered to you, you already know in your heart how Haurchefant felt. Whether you see it as platonic or romantic, it is undeniable to me how love there is between Haurchefant and Warrior of Light together.

He light-heartedly teases that this could serve as a new headquarters of sorts and gives it the name "Falling Snows" and anyone looking for you with suspicion will be turned away.

Haurchefant pleaded with his father Count Edmont de Fortemps to take you, Alphinaud, and Tataru as wards of House Fortemps. Initially Count Edmont refused because housing fugitives could bring unwanted troubles to House Fortemps. But Count Edmont could not deny the persistence in Haurchefant which led him to ask why Haurchefant was so driven on your behalf.

And so, Haurchefant bared his heart to his father. Which he believes may have been the longest conversation they ever had...

Haurchefant lets you know he would be there to cheer you on should you ever lose heart. He gifts you a whistle to summon a black chocobo that he personally trained and he gifts you a compass to locate aether currents. When he saw Ser Zephirin preparing to attack you, he jumped in between to try and shield the attack away.

He could not bear the thought of losing you.

But in protecting you, you lost him. To me, Haurchefant loves you. Whether you interpret his affections platonically or romantically. He describes you as "hope incarnate" and would take the opportunity any time he can to fight by your side.

In the side story "Thoughts Unspoken", a manservant of House Fortemps found a letter Haurchefant had kept secret in his private chambers in Camp Dragonhead . To me, the letter was a love letter. In it, Haurchefant writes that he does not intend to deliver it to you, but he needed to put his overwhelming feelings into words every time he thinks about you. What adventures or battles could you be caught in? He writes more in detail about the time he championed for you to Count Edmont in taking you in as wards of House Fortemps. He saw the despair you were in and wanted nothing more than to help you and prevent you from being consumed by it. Haurchefant would cross the world if you needed him to.

Your presence at House Fortemps Manor was more reason for him to come visit and he could not wait to hear about all the stories you will share, perhaps over a drink! Haurchefant, in this undelivered letter, promise and swear that he will be there for you should you ever falter.

The manservant was not successful in delivering this letter to you. But he saw you smiling at Haurchefant's memorial site and know that even if this letter and Haurchefant's words were never delivered to you, you already know in your heart how Haurchefant felt.

Whether you see it as platonic or romantic, it is undeniable to me how love there is between Haurchefant and Warrior of Light together.
